Project Gaandiva

Following the call by the Union Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore for State governments to seek assistance from private enterprises to promote sports, the Andhra Pradesh Government will launch an ambitious programme — Project Gaandiva. The programme has been conceptualized by TENVIC Sports Education, founded by legendary cricketer Anil Kumble in association with table tennis star Vasanth Bharadwaj, with focus on identifying and grooming young talent. The comprehensive sports policy covers various sports disciplines across all districts of Andhra Pradesh with regards to coaching programmess from grassroots to Centre of Excellence (CoE). SAAP (Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh) has been a pioneer for envisioning such a world-class sports project.

Fakhar Zaman

Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman became the sixth international batsman and the first Pakistani player to score a double hundred against Zimbabwe. Pakistan ended at 399/1, which is the highest score for Pakistan in ODIs. Zaman joined an elite list of players - Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, Chris Gayle and Martin Guptill - as the only players with double-hundreds in ODIs. Sharma still remains the only player with multiple double-centuries (3). Imam-ul-Haq and Zaman’s 304-run opening stand is also a record for highest opening partnership in ODIs.

New Entrants To International Tennis Hall Of Fame

Former Wimbledon champion Michael Stich of Germany and 14-time Grand Slam doubles champion Helena Sukova of the Czech Republic will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Stich won 18 career singles titles in 31 finals before retiring in 1997. Sukova captured 10 singles titles as well as 69 career doubles crowns before retiring in 1998.

Neeraj Strikes Gold

India's star javelin-thrower Neeraj Chopra have won the gold medal at the Sotteville Athletics meet in France. Neeraj, who had won the gold medal at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games earlier in 2018, threw 85.17 metres to bag the yellow metal with a massive margin. Moldova's Andrian Mardare threw a distance of 81.48m to take the silver while Edis Matusevicius (79.31m) of Lithuania settled for bronze. The man from Panipat is also a part of India's squad for the Asian Games 2018 to be held in Jakarta.

Wimbledon 2018

Men’s Singles: Novak Djokovic of Serbia won his fourth Wimbledon Men's Singles title beating South Africa's Kevin Anderson. He had earlier won the coveted title in 2011, 2014 and 2015. It was his 13th career Grand Slam crown.

Women’s Singles: Angelique Kerber beat Serena Williams to become the Wimbledon singles champion. Now she has three Major titles - the 2016 Australian Open, the 2016 US Open, and the 2018 Wimbledon Championships. She has also won an Olympic silver medal while representing Germany at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

FIFA World Cup 2018

France have won their second World Cup Football title. In a final at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, they defeated Croatia 4-2. France won its first World Cup on its home soil in 1998. Belgium beat England and finished third in the tournament.

Cricketer Mohammad Kaif has retired from all forms of the game. He played 13 Tests and 125 ODIs for India. He is best known for fielding. He was crucial part in India’s successful chase of 326, recovering from a precarious 146 for five to win the NatWest Trophy final against England.
