Policy Measures

  • Government of India had set up the Department of Women and Child Development, in the year 1985 as a part of the Ministry of Human Resource Development to give the much-needed impetus to the holistic development of women and children.
  • Two Statutory Commissions have been established to safeguard the constitutional and legal rights of women and Children, redress deprivation of their rights and promote gender justice and equality namely: i. National Commission for Women (NCW), ii. National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR)
  • The number of Ministries/Departments reflecting their schemes and programmes in the Gender Budget Statement has increased from 9 in 2005-06 to 30 in 2014-15 and the magnitude of gender budget has also increased from 2.79% to 5.46% during the same period.
  • National Policy for the Empowerment of Women 2001 passed by the Government has as its goal bringing about advancement, development and empowerment of women in all spheres of life through creation of a more responsive judicial and legal system sensitive to women and mainstreaming a gender perspective in the development process.
