Deep Ocean Mission

‘Deep Ocean Mission (DOM)’ is an initiative of the Ministry of Earth Sciences which aims to explore the depths of the ocean for the possibilities of deep-sea mining.

  • Among the key deliverables to achieve these goals are an offshore desalination plant that will work with tidal energy, and developing a submersible vehicle that can go to a depth of at least 6,000 metres with three people on board.
  • The seabed consists of numerous materials from iron, nickel, manganese and cobalt. It is estimated that 10% of recovery of that reserve can meet India’s energy requirements for the next 100 years.
