Multi Modal Logistics Park

On 24th August, 2022, a tripartite MoU was signed by National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) for swift development of modern Multi Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) under Bharatmala Pariyojna.

  • The goal is to consolidate freight centrally and lower logistics spending from 14 per cent of GDP to less than 10 per cent, in line with international standards.

Benefits of MMLPs: Reducing Transportation Cost: Logistics parks will drive 10% reduction in transportation cost for the top 15 nodes by enabling freight movement on higher sized trucks and rail.

  • Pollution Reduction: Increased freight movement on higher sized trucks and rail will enable in reduction in CO2emissions. Higher sized vehicles, on account of lower fuel consumption per ton per km, will result in lower CO2 emissions.
  • Congestion Reduction: Increased freight movement on higher sized trucks and rail will result in reduction in freight vehicles. In addition, shifting warehouses and wholesale markets, currently being operated inside the city, to logistics parks would free up urban spaces, enabling congestion reduction.
  • Improved Warehousing: Warehouses operating in cities will stand to benefit after shifting to MMLPs as they will incur low rentals. Additionally, modern and mechanised storage solutions provided by logistics parks will enable reduction in storage and handling losses.
