The National Highways Authority of India Act, 1988

The National Highways Authority of India Act, 1988 provided for the constitution of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the development, maintenance and management of national highways and for matters connected therewith.

  • NHAI is a nodal agency of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
  • In February 1995, NHAI came into operation and was formally made an autonomous body.
  • With collaboration of NHAI, Ministry of Transport has launched the Green Highways Programme in 2016.
