As a result of good monsoon during 2016-17, area sown under most cropsincreased in 2016-17.
The largest increasewas recorded under pulses which is around43.66 lakh hectares (around 17.5 percent)more over 2015-16.
The area coverage undertur, gram, urad and moong increased byaround 36%, 14%, 24% and 12% respectively, over 2015-16.
The area coverage under wheat and coarsecereals also increased by 2.97 lakh hectaresto 307.15 lakh hectares and by 2.94 lakhhectares to 246.83 lakh hectares in 2016-17compared to 2015-16 respectively.
However, there was a decline in the area under rice by 5.77 lakh hectares in 2016-17 as compared tothe previous year.
