At the federal level, many agencies are part of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, and support the states in their duties. Larger cities also operate metropolitan police forces, under respective state governments. All senior police officers in the state police forces, as well as those in the federal agencies, are members of the Indian Police Service (IPS).
There are seven police forces under the Home Ministry of the Union Government. Indian Police forces and the paramilitary forces - Assam Rifles, Border Security Force, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, Rashtriya Rifles, Indian Home Guards, National Security Guard and Special Protection Group - and State and UTs police force are there to tackle internal security issues.
