Indian States

India is a federal union comprising 29 states and 7 union territories, for a total of 36 entities. The states and union territories are further subdivided into districts and smaller administrative divisions.

Andhra Pradesh

  • Bordering States/ UTs: Shares its borders with Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and the Union Territories of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. The Arabian Sea borders the state both to the west and the south-west. It also shares border with Pakistan.
  • The present state of Gujarat came into being on 1st May, 1960.

Haryana

  • ‘Niwari’ became the 52nd district of Madhya Pradesh on 1 October 2018. It was carved out of district Tikamgarh.

  • The state of Manipur became a fulfledged state on 21st January, 1972. Due to its wealth of flora and fauna, Manipur is described as a ‘flower on lofty heights’, ‘a jewel of India’ and ‘Switzerland of the East’. Manipur has the advantage of acting as India’s ‘Gateway to the East’ through Moreh town, which is the only feasible land route for trade between India and Myanmar and other Southeast Asian countries.

Meghalaya

Tamil Nadu

  • ‘Kallakurichi’ became the 33rd district of Tamil Nadu on 8 January 2019 when it was created out of Viluppuram district, which was the largest district in the state.

Telangana
