Union Territories

Union Territories are administrative divisions of India ruled directly by the Union Government unlike State Governments which rule themselves.

  • When the Indian Constitution was adopted in 1949, there was only one union territory: Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • The National Capital Territory of Delhi, Chandigarh and Lakshadweep were formed by separating the territory from pre-existing states.
  • Dadra Nagar Haveli, Daman Diu and Puducherry were formed from acquired territories that formerly belonged to Portuguese India or French India.
  • Delhi and Puducherry were given partial statehood.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands

  • Population: 380581 (2011)-(4th populous UT)
  • Density of Population: 46
  • Sex Ratio: 876
  • Literacy: 86.63% (Male: 90.27%; Female: 82.43%)
  • Principal Languages: Hindi, Nicobarese, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu
  • Bordering Area: Located in the Bay of Bengal, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are bounded by the water of the Indian Ocean.
  • Three islands in Andaman and Nicobar - Ross Island, Neil Island and Havelock Island were renamed as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island, Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep respectively.

Chandigarh

  • Area: 114 sq km (5th largest UT)
  • Population: 1055450 (2011)-(3rd populous UT)
  • Density of Population: 9,252
  • Sex Ratio: 818
  • Literacy: 86.05% (Male: 89.99%; Female: 81.19%)
  • Principal Languages: Punjabi and Hindi
  • Bordering States: Chandigarh is bordered by the state of Punjab to the north, the west and the south, and to the state of Haryana to the east.

Dadra & Nagar Haveli

  • Capital: Silvassa
  • Area: 491 sq km (4th largest UT)
  • Population: 342,853 (2011) –(5th populous UT)
  • Density of Population: 698
  • Sex Ratio: 774
  • Literacy: 76.24% (Male: 85.17%; Female: 64.32%)
  • Principal Languages: Gujarati and Hindi
  • Bordering Area: Dadra and Nagar Haveli lie to the south of Gujarat. It is a Union Territory and comes under the jurisdiction of Mumbai High Court.

Daman & Diu

  • Capital: Daman
  • Area: 112 sq km (6th largest UT)
  • Districts: 2
  • Population:243247 (2011)-(6th populous UT)
  • Density of Population: 2191
  • Sex Ratio: 618
  • Literacy: 87.10% (Male: 91.54%; Female: 79.55%)
  • Principal Language: Gujarati
  • Bordering Area: It is bounded on the east by Gujarat, on the west by the Arabian Sea.

Delhi

  • Capital: New Delhi
  • Area: 1483 sq km (2nd largest UT)
  • Districts: 11
  • Population: 16787941 (2011)- (Most populous UT)
  • Density of Population: 11,320 per sq km
  • Sex Ratio: 868
  • Literacy: 86.32% (Male: 91.46%; Female: 83.18%)
  • Principal Languages: Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, and English
  • Bordering States: Delhi is surrounded by Haryana on all sides except the east where it borders with Uttar Pradesh.

Lakshadweep

  • Capital: Kavaratti
  • Area: 32 sq km (Smallest UT)
  • Population: 64473 (2011) –(Least populated UT)
  • Density of Population: 2,013
  • Sex Ratio: 946
  • Literacy: 91.85% (Male: 95.56%; Female: 87.95%)
  • Principal Languages: Malyalam, Dhivehi (language of Maldives)
  • Bordering Area: Lakshadweep, a group of islands consist of 12 atolls. There are 36 reef-islands, out of which only 11 islands are inhabited. These islands lie about 280 to 480 km off the Kerala coast in the Arabian Sea.

Puducherry

  • Capital: Puducherry
  • Area: 479 sq km (3rd largest UT)
  • Districts: 4
  • Population: 1247953 (2011)-(2nd most populous UT)
  • Density of Population: 2,547
  • Sex Ratio: 1,037
  • Literacy: 85.85% (Male: 91.26%; Female: 80.67%).
  • Principal Languages: Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, French
  • Bordering States: Bounded on the east by the Bay of Bengal and on the three sides by Tamil Nadu.
  • Formerly known as Pondicherry, it was under the French rule for 138 years and merged with the Indian Union on 1st November, 1954. ww
