Important observations from the data

  • Uttar Pardesh and Bihar have the highest number of out-migrants (20.9 million out of 56 million), whereas Mumbai and Delhi have the highest number of in-migrants (9.9 million out of 29 million).
  • The Hindi belt is the main source of migrants. Almost 50% of the total inter-state migrants are from 4 states which are Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Whereas Delhi, Mumbai, Gujarat, and Haryana housed 50% of the inter-state migrants.
  • The number of inter-state migrants grew at 55% between the 1991 and 2001 Census.

Reasons cited for Migration

  1. For male – Work and Business (more than 1/3rd of migration (40.5%)), followed by education (6.2%) and marriage (2.1%)
  2. For female – Marriage (64.9%), followed by migration with household (18.9%) and migration post birth (4.8%).
