All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE)

It was established in 1988 as per AICTE Act, 1987 with the objective of promoting quality education, planned and co-ordinated development of technical education system, and regulation & maintenance of norms and standards for technical education in India.

Functions

  • It grants approval for setting up of new technical institutions, approval for extensions to already existing institutions and approval for change in location of technical institutes in the country.
  • It grants approval for the increase of intake/addition of new courses in the first/ regular shift in the existing technical institutes.
  • It also initiates the process of closure of technical institutes if the respective institutes apply for the same.
  • As of academic year 2017-18, total 10,400 AICTE recognised institutes are there in the country.
