Biotechnology Programme for Societal Development

Biotechnology based programme for societal development was initiated in 1990 to benefit the vulnerable section of the society particularly the farmers, women and SC/ST population.

  • The emphasis was on diffusion of proven and field tested interventions with an approach to reach the unreached through various means like field demonstrations, trainings, education campaigns etc.
  • The programme aims to promote dissemination of biotech interventions in agriculture and allied sector including animal husbandry, dairy and fisheries, integrated farming system, health & nutrition, environment & biodiversity conservation, product / process development and value addition etc. for the benefit of the underprivileged section of the society.

Challenges that need to be Addressed for the Desired Growth Include:

Need to boost demand for biotechnology products

  • Reforming the Regulatory system
  • Improving the ‘Ease of Doing’ business in India
  • Providing the right policy environment including fiscal and tax incentives to boost R&D and manufacturing
  • Providing the right infrastructure for companies
  • Improving the access to biotech companies
  • Skill development for biotechnology research
  • Enabling Indian companies to acquire world class manufacturing quality
  • Indian Biotech sector has grown about 20% CAGR in the period from 2005 to 2015. If the industry has to reach its ambitious target of USD 100 billion by 2025, it needs to embark on a higher growth of 30% CAGR during the next ten years.
