Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF)

Formed in 1995, CLGF works as a forum for local government (including local government associations, individual local authorities, ministries dealing with local government, and research and professional organizations who work with local government) which makes sure that the voices of local government are not just heard but also recognised at Commonwealth of Nations.

  • There are 200 members from 53 Commonwealth countries.
  • CLGF is currently working in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh as part of the wider DFID (Department for International Development) funded programme supporting local governance and local economic development.

Conclusion

Indian urban growth story is complex as it is marred by both regional and global issues. The solutions thus cannot be plain and simple.

Any future policy initiatives must be based on the following principles like – compact and phase wise development, development of highway corridors, focus on low cost housing, ensuring proper regional development, green norm based transportation system, ground water conservation, proper solid waste disposal, universalizing health and education, development of green space etc., in short, ensuring ‘quality life for all involved’.
