Conference of Parties-25 (CoP-25)

  • CoP-25 to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was held under the Presidency of Chile, Spain (2nd to 15th December, 2019). The conference was expected to arrive at consensus on a range of issues, particularly Article 6 of Paris Agreement, Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage associated with Climate Change Impacts and climate finance.
  • Discussion on 3 major agenda’s took place – the rules for a new carbon market, demand to enhance climate actions and need to make developed countries accountable to their obligations under pre-2020 climate period.

Major Outcomes of CoP-25 (Chile Madrid Time for Action)

  • The European Commission published its European Green Deal which aims to be a comprehensive strategy document pushing EU towards ‘no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050’.
  • No outcome on the above 3 agenda’s as there remain a tussle between developed and developing countries.
