Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019: Recently in October, 2019 government has made a change in Citizenship Act to grant Indian citizenship to the certain migrant’s categories.

  • Land Boundary Agreement (LBA): The 100th Constitution Amendment Act 2015 ratified the land boundary agreement between India and Bangladesh which enabled the swapping of enclaves.
  • Foreigners Act of 1946: It is an Act of the Imperial Legislative Assembly enacted to grant certain powers to the Government of India in matters of dealing with foreigners. The act has been enforced throughout India to deport illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
  • Vulnerability Mapping of the Border Out-Posts (BOPs) which are sensitive with regard to illegal migration/cross border crimes along the Indo-Bangladesh Border have been carried out. These identified BOPs have been strengthened by deploying additional man power, Special Surveillance Equipment, vehicles and other infrastructure support.
  • Use of Pontoon bridges, sluice gates (controls flow of water and checks changing course of Brahmaputra) and aerostats fitted with intelligent high-resolution cameras will be used to plug vulnerable patches along a 60-km long stretch in riverine areas on the Indo-Bangla border in Assam.
  • The force is also looking at placing ‘unattended ground sensors’ in the dense forward areas. An assortment of high resolution cameras, radars, infra-red sensors and hand-held thermal imagers is being planned to seal the border.
  • Round the clock surveillance of the borders by patrolling nakas (border ambushes) with simultaneous construction of fence, patrol roads, floodlighting systems and additional Border Out-Posts to ensure greater border security.
  • Raising the issue of infiltration from across the border during various meetings with counterpart countries i.e. Company Commander Meeting, Commandant Level Meeting, Sector Commander Level Meeting, Frontier Level Meeting and Director General Level Talks.
  • Up-gradation and co-ordination among sister intelligence agencies e.g. Army intelligence unit, IB, local police intelligence inputs etc.
  • Aerial Reconnaissance along the borders is also carried out from time to time.
