National Highways Act, 1956 was enacted to provide for the declaration of certain highways to be national highways and for matters connected therewith.
The schedule of the act specified the existing national highways and also the act empowers the government to declare any other highway to be a national highway by notification.
The Act provides that all national highways shall vest in the Union (government). This highway will include all bridges, culverts, tunnels, causeways, carriageways, fences, trees, posts and boundary and other structures constructed on or across such highways.
It shall be the responsibility of the Central Government to develop and maintain in proper repair all national highways and also it can delegate its power to anyone by notification. The levy fees will also be notified by the government.
