National Urban Transport Policy (2006)

It envisages safe, affordable, quick, comfortable, reliable and sustainable urban transport systems, establishment of quality focused multi-modal public transport systems that are well integrated, providing seamless travel across modes, land use transport integration, introducing intelligent transport systems for traffic management etc.

  • It talks of integrating urban land use and transport planning. It recommends priority to the use of public transport, BRTS system of Colombia and Electric trolley vehicles of San Francisco as future alternatives to decongest roads etc. The problems with the policy have been of – perception of people towards public transport and poor planning capacity at the local level.
  • New Metro Policy, National Transit Oriented Development Policy all are aligned with National Urban Transport Policy.
