NCRB Data on Cyber Crimes

On 21st October 2019, Crime in India Report for the year 2017 was released by the National Crime Records Bureau.

  • The report for the first time includes data on cyber-stalking and cyber-bullying of women. A total of 555 cases of cyber-stalking and cyber-bullying of women have been registered across India in 2017, with Maharashtra registering the most number of cases (301) followed by Andhra Pradesh (48 cases) and Telangana and Haryana with 27 cases each at third place.
  • A total of 7 cases of cyber-stalking and cyber-bullying against children were reported from across India, with three cases being reported from Maharashtra. Across India, a total of 88 cyber-crimes against children were reported.
  • A 77% rise in the number of cybercrime cases was observed in 2017 compared to 2016. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka registered the maximum number of such cases.
  • Fake News: NCRB for the first time collected data on circulation of “false/fake news and rumours.” Maximum incidents were reported from Madhya Pradesh (138).
