New Social Media Policy

India plans to introduce rules to regulate social media because it can cause “unimaginable disruption” to democracy. The government has provided written answer to the Supreme Court of India that it is introducing new policy to curb the menace of Social Media influence that causes violence at the end.

  • At present, there is only a set of “do’s and don’ts” for the social media which needs to be graduated to full-fledged guidelines that should be adopted on such a network.
  • The move assumes significance as there have been instances where terrorists were found to be using social media to conspire against the country or to propagate anti-India materials.

As a society, we often fail to value privacy. It is starkly reflected in the absence of privacy policies. The discourse on privacy policies has been brought forward in the public domain only when privacy has been breached.
