Renewable Energy Now Accounts for a Third of Global Power Capacity: IRENA

According to International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), a third of global power generation capacity is now being fuelled by renewable energy sources.

  • Asia accounted for 61% of new capacity in 2018 and continued to dominate the global solar capacity expansion. China, India, Japan and Republic of Korea accounted for most of this.

  • India has been working on the world’s largest global green energy programme with an installed renewable energy capacity of 74.79GW.
  • The country’s energy demand is likely to go up by 2.7-3.2 times between 2012 and 2040 fuelled by schemes such as Saubhagya Yojana which has already provided 99.93% targeted households with electricity connections as on 31st March, 2019.
