Silver Line Project

On 17th December, 2019, the Ministry of Railways granted in-principle approval for the Silver Line project to be implemented in Kerala, which is scheduled to be commissioned by 2024. This semi-high speed rail is expected to cut travel time between Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod from 12 hours to 4 hours.

  • It involves construction of railway lines in Kasaragod in the north to Kochuveli (Thiruvananthapuram) in the south for the movement of semi high-speed trains.
  • The Kerala Rail Development Corporation (K-Rail), a joint venture between the Ministry of Railways and the Kerala government to execute projects on a cost-sharing basis, will be the nodal agency.
  • Significance of the Project: The construction will result in direct and indirect employment opportunities for 50,000 people, and the project once completed would create direct employment for at least 11,000 people, fast-tracking the economy of the state.
