Untouchability Offences Act, 1955

The Untouchability Offences Act, 1955 was framed to prescribe punishment for preaching and practicing untouchability, as per Article 17 of the Constitution. Initially the punishment was prescribed between 3 to 6 months with fine of Rs. 100.

  • It was amended in 1976 to make punishment more stringent and was renamed as Protection of Civil Rights Act.
