Paving way to empowering single women, the Supreme Court allowed unmarried women a choice to terminate their pregnancy upto 24 weeks.

  • The court said, "The meaning of rape must include the meaning of marital rape solely within the meaning of MTP Act and Rules. Such a requirement of proving rape for the purpose of MTP Act shall be against the object of the Act."
  • Thus, court delivered an important interpretation of Rule 3B (Women eligible for termination of pregnancy up to twenty-four weeks) of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Rules, 2003.
