It is the premier technical organization in the field of water resources in the country since 1945.
The Commission is entrusted with the general responsibility of initiating, coordinating and furthering schemes for control, conservation and utilization of water resources throughout the country for the purpose of irrigation, flood control, drinking water supply and hydro-power development, in consultation with the State Governments.
