G20: India’s Presidency

In 2023, India has become a member of the 'G20 troika', which includes previous, current, and future G20 chairs, along with Italy and Indonesia. It will be a great opportunity for India to influence global economic governance and contribute to the global agenda by expressing its own objectives and thoughts.

  • This event exemplifies the country's ever-increasing attempts to push prosperity and attract international investment. According to UNCTAD, while the worldwide slump in economic activity resulted in a 42 per cent drop in FDI in 2020, FDI received by India increased by 13 per cent in the same year.
  • According to government figures (Apr-Jun, 2021-22), India got $ 17.6 billion in total FDI, up 168 per cent year on year. This will to succeed in the face of adversity has put India in a strong position to be considered a strategic and compelling partner in the post-Covid-19 global recovery.

Significance/Impacts: The Indian G20 presidency will give India the opportunity to not only project itself as a major actor in global economic governance, but also to rewrite some of the rules of global development agenda.
