India-Australia Relations

India is Australia’s 7th largest trading partner. Bilateral trade between them stands more than US $ 24 billion.

Exports: India’s main exports to Australia are refined petroleum, medicaments (incl. veterinary), pearls & gems, jewellery, made-up textile articles, women’s clothing, other textile clothing, base metal products, etc.

Imports: India’s major imports are coal, confidential items of trade, copper ores & concentrates, natural gas, non-ferrous waste & scrap, ferrous waste & scrap and education related services.

Strategic Partnership: In 2009, India and Australia established a ‘Strategic Partnership’, including a Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation which has been further elevated to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020.

Nuclear Cooperation: A Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement between the two countries was signed in 2014.

Defence Cooperation: Ausindex: It is a major biennial bilateral naval exercise between Australia and India.

Exercise Pitch Black: It is a biennial air exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Indian Air Force participated recently in 2022.

Austrahind: The bilateral training exercise “AUSTRA HIND 22” between contingents of the Indian Army and the Australian Army was held at Mahajan Field Firing Ranges (Rajasthan) from 28 November to 11 December 2022. This was the first exercise in the series of AUSTRA HIND with participation of all arms and services contingent from both armies.

Science and Technology: An Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF), which was established in 2006, supports collaboration between scientists in India and Australia on cutting-edge research.
