INS Vikrant: First Indigenous Aircraft Carrier

On 2nd September, 2022, Prime Minister commissioned the country’s first indigenous aircraft carrier Indian Naval Ship (INS) Vikrant at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).

  • INS Vikrant has been built with 76 per cent indigenous content which includes specialised steel, jointly developed by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Significance: With the commissioning, India has joined the elite group of nations (US, Russia, France, the UK and China) having capability to indigenously design and build an Aircraft Carrier.

  • As India is moving rapidly towards a $5 trillion economy, our share in global trade will increase in the coming times. If the share will increase, a large part of it will inevitably be through maritime routes. In such a situation, INS Vikrant will prove to be crucial to safeguard our security and economic interests.
