IOR+ Defence Ministers’ Conclave

On 19th October, 2022, India hosted the IOR+ Defence Ministers’ Conclave on the sidelines of 12th DefExpo in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The conclave was attended by 40 countries. It was organised by the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence (Government of India).

  • The broad theme was ‘Challenges, Opportunities and Collaborations in the Indian Ocean’.
  • It facilitated dialogue towards fostering a stable and peaceful Indian Ocean, with strategic and commercial partnerships within the IOR, in line with India’s vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).

Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA)

  • It is an inter-governmental organisation formed in 1997 to foster regional economic cooperation.
  • The Association comprises 23 Member States and 9 Dialogue Partners, the Indian Ocean Tourism Organisation and the Indian Ocean Research Group have observer status.
  • Dialogue Partners: China, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Japan.
  • IORA became an observer to the UN General Assembly and the African Union in 2015.
  • The IORA Secretariat is based in Mauritius. It is headed by a fixed term Secretary-General.
