Pam Rajput Committee

The committee was formed by Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2012 with the objective of evaluating the status of women from 1989 to 2012. It was headed by Pam Rajput who was a professor from Punjab University. The committee submitted its report in 2012.

Major Recommendations of the Committee: Creation of a National Women Policy and an action plan to end violence against women.

  • 50% reservation for women in all decision making bodies and complete overhaul of criminal justice system to ensure justice for women.
  • Increase gender sensitivity in government machinery.
  • Effectively implement PCPNDT act and anti-dowry law.
  • A separate panel to study the condition of Muslim women in India must be setup.
  • This committee also gave following suggestions to the following bodies: Parliamentary Committee on the Empowerment of Women: It must study and examine all the legislations proposed in the Parliament regarding women.
  • National Commission for Women (apex body for women): It must go beyond ‘reactive interventions’ in women cases. It must study, recommend and influence policies, laws, programs and budgets so that women in India can really benefit.
  • National Policy on Women, 2016 was drafted by government on the basis of the recommendations of the committee.
