Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram

The Multi-sectoral Development Programme which was launched in 2008-09 was restructured and renamed as Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram in 2018.

  • Aim: It aims to develop socio-economic infrastructure and basic amenities in minority areas. It will address the development deficits of the identified Minority Concentration Areas.
  • Implementation: It is a centrally sponsored scheme under the Ministry of Minority Affairs implemented in the Minority Concentration Areas of the country. The implementing agencies may be the State PSUs/State Govt. construction agencies, DRDA and CPSEs. The parameters for identification of Minority Concentration Areas are based on the data of Census, 2011. It is being implemented in 308 districts of the country.

Significance: It will give provide boost to basic infrastructure in minority areas such as electricity, drinking water, sanitation, pucca houses etc. as under PMJVK 80% of the resources would be utilized for projects related to education, health and skill development.

  • It will improve the capabilities and quality of life of the people belonging to minority communities, which will be crucial for inclusive development of the country.
  • It would catalyze income generating opportunities, thus providing them with a larger pie of India’s economic growth.
  • It would lead to gender inclusion as 33 to 40% of resources under the scheme are specifically allocated for women centric projects.
