Renewables 2022 Global Status Report

Recently, the Renewables 2022 Global Status Report (GSR 2022) was released by the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21).

  • The report documents the progress made in the renewable energy sector across the globe.

Renewables: India’s Performance- Renewable Energy: India ranked third in renewable energy installations in 2021, after China and Russia.

  • New Solar PV Capacity: India was the second largest market in Asia for new solar PV capacity and third globally. Annual solar additions in the country underwent substantial growth in 2021 with an additional 13 GW installed.
  • Total Solar Installations: India ranked fourth for total solar installations (60.4 GW), overtaking Germany (59.2 GW) for the first time.
  • Hydropower: India added 843 MW of hydropower capacity in 2021, raising the total capacity to 45.3 GW.
  • Wind Power: India ranked third globally for the total installed capacity of wind power (40.1 GW), behind China, the US and Germany.

REN21

  • Formation: It was created in 2004 as an outcome of the Bonn 2004 International Conference on Renewable Energy.
  • Aim: To enable decision-makers to make the shift to renewable energy.
  • It is the only global renewable energy community of actors from science, governments, NGOs and industry that keep track of global developments in the renewables sector.
