Scheme of Ashram Schools in Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) Areas

It was launched in 1990-91 with the objective to increase education among Scheduled Tribes including Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). Ashram Schools provide education with residential facilities in an environment conducive to learning.

  • Features of the Scheme: The scheme is operational in the Tribal Sub-Plan States/UT Administrations.
  • Construction of Ashram schools for the primary, middle, secondary and senior secondary stages of education as well as upgradation of existing Ashram Schools for Scheduled Tribe boys and girls including PTGs (Primitive Tribal Groups which have been renamed as PVTGs).
  • 100% funding for establishment of Ashram Schools i.e. school buildings, hostels, kitchen and staff quarters for girls and boys (only in Naxal affected region) in TSP areas.
  • The only drawback of such schools is that it emphasizes too much on English language. Since the motive of the scheme is to ensure proper primary education, the children must be taught in native language so that they can understand and learn better.
