Scientists Detect New Fast Radio Burst

Recently, astronomers reported a fast radio burst (FRB) whose characteristics are different from almost all other FRBs previously detected, except one. It has been named FRB 20190520B.

  • The FRB was detected following scientists’ observation of a radio signal coming from a galaxy believed to be nearly 3 billion light-years away. The detection raises more questions about the origin and source of these signals.

About FRBs: These are intense but brief flashes of radio frequency emissions and these typically last milliseconds.

  • These are known to send out repeat radio waves multiple times. Their origins are unknown, and their appearance is unpredictable.
  • Since the first FRB was discovered in 2007, 140 more were discovered until June 2021.
