United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

UNESCO was established in 1945 with the objective to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science, and culture. Its headquarters is located in Paris.

  • UNESCO implements its programmes in the areas of Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture, Communication and Information.
  • UNESCO’s programmes contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals defined in Agenda 2030, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015.
  • It also lists world heritage sites apart from awarding educational achievements. In India, there are 40 World heritage sites as of December, 2021.
  • USA and Israel withdrew from UNESCO in 2019 as the two countries opposed several anti-Israel resolutions passed by the UN-organization in previous years.
