Urban Governance Index (UGI)

The Urban Governance Index 2020 was released by the Praja Foundation. The Urban Governance Index was topped by Odisha followed by Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh and Manipur and Nagaland were at the bottom.

Objective: The idea behind building the UGI is to understand the extent of decentralisation of the Urban Governance framework and the associated devolution of powers to the City Governments across states in the country.

Significance: The UGI is built on foundations of four themes which are divided into 13 sub-themes which consist a total of 42 indicators.

  • Stakeholders can use the index as a base to monitor implementations
  • UGI can be used by the states to evaluate their urban governance systems vis-à-vis other states, and in identifying the necessary reform actions that are to be taken for improvisation in the system
