On 1st December, 2021, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) launched its flagship World Migration Report 2022.
The report reveals a dramatic increase in internal displacement due to disasters, conflict and violence at a time when global mobility ground to a halt due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.
The current global estimate is that there were around 281 million international migrants in the world in 2020, which equates to 3.6 per cent of the global population.
In 2020, internal conflict and violence displacement events were 9.8 million globally. Internal disaster displacement events were 30.7 million globally in 2020.
