National Commission for Minorities

  • In January 1978, Government of India had set up a “Minorities Commission” to safeguard the interests of minorities. With the enactments of the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992, the Minorities Commission became a statutory body and was renamed as the “National Commission for Minorities”. The first commission was constituted on May 17th, 1993.
  • The main functions of the Commission are to evaluate the progress of the development of minorities, monitor the working of the safeguards provided in the Constitution and in laws enacted by the Central Government/State Governments, for the protection of the interests of minorities and look into specific compliant regarding deprivation of the rights of minorities.
