Anti-Trafficking Bill, 2018

The Lok Sabha on July 26, 2018 passed a comprehensive law to deal with the menace of human trafficking.

Key Highlights

  • The Bill provides for the establishment of a National Anti-Trafficking Bureau to investigate trafficking cases and implement provisions of the Bill.
  • The Bureau will comprise of police officers, and any other officers as required. It may take over the investigation of any offence under the Bill that has been referred to it by two or more states.
  • Need for an Anti-Trafficking Law: Over the last 10 years, India has made phenomenal progress in promulgating and amending several pieces of legislation that will go a long way in upholding the rights of its children - for example, the Right to Education Act (2009), POCSO Act (2012), Juvenile Justice Act (2015), the new child labour law of 2016.
