DNA Technology (Use and Application) Bill, 2018

The Union Cabinet approved the introduction of the DNA Technology (Use and Application) Bill, 2018.

Key Highlights

  • Expand the application of DNA-based forensic technologies to support and strengthen the justice delivery system of the country
  • Utilise DNA-based technologies for solving crimes, and to identify missing persons
  • Provide for mandatory accreditation and regulation of DNA laboratories
  • Ensure that DNA test results are reliable and the privacy rights of citizens with respect to the data remain protected
  • Enable the matching between persons who have been reported missing and unidentified dead bodies found in various parts of India, and also to establish the identity of victims in mass disasters
