Star Rating of Mines

A ‘Star Rating’ system has been instituted (in 2016) by the Ministry of Mines through Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), in which star rating is awarded to the mining leases for their efforts and initiatives taken for implementation of the Sustainable Development Framework (SDF).

  • The Ministry of Mines instituted the Sustainable Development Framework (SDF) for taking up mining activity, encompassing inclusive growth, without adversely affecting the social, economic and environmental well-being, at present and also in future generation.
  • The rating of one to five stars would be given to the mines by IBM and the best performing leases would be given 5 Stars. Also, under this system, a provisional ‘Star Rating’ is awarded on self-certification basis of the evaluation template, filed by the mining lessee.
  • A web-portal has been developed for online filing of the evaluation template for Star Rating of Mines.
  • Since its inception, 9 mines in July 2016, 32 mines in February 2017 and 57 mines in March 2018 have been awarded “Five Star” rating so far.
