It was setup to prepare a Concept Paper on the revitalization of the PRIs.
The Committee recommended that PRI should be constitutionally recognized, protected and preserved by the inclusion of a new chapter in the constitution. It suggested a constitutional provision to ensure free and fair election to the PRIs.
On the recommendations of this committee the 64th Constitutional Amendment Bill (proposed Constitutional status to PRIs) was introduced in the Parliament but was dropped due to unstable government and opposition in Rajya Sabha.
