Golden Jubilee of North-Eastern Council

The Golden Jubilee of the North Eastern Council (NEC) was observed on the 18th December 2022 in Shillong, Meghalaya.

  • It came into being by an Act of Parliament, the North Eastern Council Act, 1971 to act as an advisory body in respect of socio-economic development and balanced development of the North Eastern Areas consisting of the present States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

Significance/Impacts of NEC in Development of the North Eastern Region: NEC has made significant contributions to the socio-economic development of the North Eastern region, as an Advisory body and as a Planning body.

  • NEC has supported significant capital and infrastructure development investment – over 11,500 km of Roads have been constructed, 694 MW of power generating capacity installed, approximately 9,000 Ckt-km of transmission and distribution lines erected.
  • NEC has also taken up the improvement of connectivity infrastructure – 5 major airports in collaboration with the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and 11 Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) projects and Four Inter-State Truck Terminus (ISTT) projects.
