India-USA Relations

Bilateral trade between the US and India stood at US$ 119.42 billion (2021-2022) as against US$ 80.51 billion in 2020-21.

  • In 2021-22, USA surpassed China becoming India's top trading partner in 2021-22.

India’s Exports and Imports: Exports to the US increased to US$ 76.11 billion in 2021-22 from US$ 51.62 billion in the previous fiscal year, while imports rose to US$ 43.31 billion as compared to about US$ 29 billion in 2020-21.

Favourable Trade: America is one of the few countries with which India has a trade surplus. In 2021-22, India had a trade surplus of USD 32.8 billion with the US.

Defence Exercises

  • Tiger Triumph: Between Indian Army and Navy and US Navy.
  • Vajra Prahar: Between United States Army Special Forces and Indian Para Special Forces.
  • Yudh Abhyas: It is the largest running joint military training and defence cooperation endeavour between India and the USA.
  • Cope India: Between Air Force units of India and USA.
  • Malabar Exercise: Quadrilateral naval exercise of India, USA, Japan and Australia.

Security Agreements: GSOMIA: A military information agreement was the first of the foundational agreements to be signed in 2002. It essentially guaranteed that the two countries would protect any classified information or technology that they shared

  • LEMOA (Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement): Signed in 2016 and it provides the framework for sharing military logistics, for example, for refuelling and replenishment of stores for ships or aircraft transiting through an Indian/US facility.
  • COMCASA (Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement): It was signed in 2018. This enables the US to supply India with its proprietary encrypted communications equipment and systems, allowing secure peacetime and wartime communications between high-level military leaders on both sides.
  • BECA (Basic Exchange Cooperation Agreement): It was signed in 2020. BECA will help India get real-time access to American geospatial intelligence that will enhance the accuracy of automated systems and weapons like missiles and armed drones.
