ICAR is an autonomous organisation under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare.
It was established on 16th July 1929 as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. ICAR is headquartered in New Delhi and was formerly known as the ‘Imperial Council of Agricultural Research’.
Functions: ICAR plans, coordinates and promotes research and technological development for sustainable agriculture. It aids, imparts and coordinates agricultural education to enable quality human resource development.
It also promotes frontline extension for technology application, adoption, knowledge management and capacity development for agri-based rural development
It promotes policies, cooperation and consultancy in agricultural research, education & extension.
