Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)

ICAR is an autonomous organisation under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare.

  • It was established on 16th July 1929 as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. ICAR is headquartered in New Delhi and was formerly known as the ‘Imperial Council of Agricultural Research’.
  • Functions: ICAR plans, coordinates and promotes research and technological development for sustainable agriculture. It aids, imparts and coordinates agricultural education to enable quality human resource development.
  • It also promotes frontline extension for technology application, adoption, knowledge management and capacity development for agri-based rural development
  • It promotes policies, cooperation and consultancy in agricultural research, education & extension.
