Lachit Borphukan

On 25th February, 2022, the President of India kick started the 400th birth anniversary celebrations of the 17th century Ahom general Lachit Borphukan and laid the foundation for a war memorial and a 150-foot bronze statue of the commander, who had protected Assam from Mughal invasion.

About Lachit Borphukan: Born on 24th November, 1622, was known for his leadership in the Battle of Saraighat, 1671 in which an attempt by Mughal forces to capture Assam was thwarted. He was given positions of responsibility of the scarf-bearer (Soladhara Barua) of the Ahom Swargadeo which was regarded as diplomat and politician.
