Revision of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ Scheme

On 11th October, 2022, the Centre revised its flagship ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ scheme to include skilling of girls in non-traditional livelihood options in its flagship program.

Need for Revision

According to the report of Parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women, the total funds given to states under Centre’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme, 78.91% have been used for advertising.

  • Also said that the Ministry of Women and Child Development, which is one of the entities that look after the scheme, has been releasing additional money despite funds pending with the state.

About Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Scheme

  • It was launched in 2015 to addresses the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and related issues of women’s empowerment over a life-cycle continuum.
  • It is a Tri-ministerial effort of the Ministries of Women and Child Development (MW&CD), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MH&FW), and Ministry of Education.
  • Since 2021-22, the scheme is subsumed into Mission Shakti - Sambal sub-scheme.
