Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019

On 12^th June, 2019, Union Cabinet approved the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 by replacing the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Second Ordinance, 2019.
It proposes to declare the practice of triple talaq as void and illegal.

Salient Features of the Bill

Cognisable Offence: It makes declaration of talaq cognizable offence, attracting up to 3 years imprisonment with a fine.
Allowances: It also provides for payment of subsistence allowance to married Muslim women against whom talaq has been declared and for dependent children. The amount of allowance will be determined by Magistrate.
