Japan in support of Whaling
- Japan has resumed commercial whaling from July 1, after it announced in December 2018, that it would leave the International Whaling Commission (IWC).
How long Japan has been Whaling?
- Some areas whaled in prehistory, and in modern times, eating whale meat is confined to specific regions only.
- Though Japan’s government insists eating whale is an important part of the country’s food culture, consumption did not become widespread until after World War II, when the occupation authorities encouraged it to feed the impoverished population.
