Registration of Marriage Bill, 2019
- On 10th April, 2019, the Registration of Marriage Bill, 2019 (NRI Bill), was introduced in the Rajya Sabha to ensure legal recourse for the victims.
- Spurt in cases of marriage fraud is the main reason behind government’s push for NRI bill.
Key Proposals of the Bill
- The bill proposes to offer greater protection to Indian women married to NRIs and serve as a deterrent to NRIs against harassment of spouses.
- Titled the Registration of Marriage or Non-Resident Indian Bill, 2019, the bill was introduced due to increasing numbers of reports of Indian women being trapped in fraudulent marriages with NRIs.
