Ban on Antibiotic Colistin
Use of Colistin has been banned in food-producing animals, poultry and aqua farms in India, in a move to curb the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in humans through animals.
- Colistin is a “reserve” antibiotic and is considered a “last-resort” option when all other alternatives have failed.
- It will prevent its misuse in India’s livestock as a growth regulator, which is one of the reasons for anti microbial resistance in India, due to unwanted use of Colistin in the poultry industry.
